Since the Charleston, South Carolina A.M.E. Church massacre of June 17, 2015, activists throughout the country have been calling for the removal of all remaining confederate symbols. The killer’s manifesto raised national attention to the corrosive influence white supremacy has on our society.
“I encourage everyone to understand the history, recognize the problems of the present and take action to show the world that the status quo is not acceptable.” ~Bree Newsome, June 29, 2015
The African American Diaspora Think Tank of Hollywood, Black Lives Matter Alliance of Broward and Broward Green Party have collected over 500 signatures from Hollywood residents on a petition to garner support for their campaign to take down the street names Forrest, Lee and Hood. The three names represent a shameful legacy of brutal oppression. Commissioners agreed to assign a committee to move forward on the matter during their May 11, 2016 meeting with the community.
“The Green Party stands in solidarity with The African American Diaspora Think Tank of Hollywood and The Black Lives Matter Alliance of Broward. We unequivocally condemn all remaining symbols of slavery. We will continue to raise awareness until the names are taken down and replaced with those of African-American heroes.” said Silvie Suri-Perez, Co-Chair of the Broward Green Party.
